Concrete Curing and Drying: What Every Homeowner Should Know

Pouring a new driveway, patio or shed slab is an exciting milestone, but the work isn’t finished the moment the concrete is laid. What happens over the following days and weeks determines whether your slab lasts for decades or starts cracking and crumbling far too soon. Understanding the difference between curing and drying is the key, and it’s something plenty of Australians get wrong.

Curing and Drying Aren’t the Same Thing

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe very different processes.

Curing is the chemical reaction known as hydration, where water and cement bond together to give concrete its strength. This process needs moisture to keep going. Drying, on the other hand, is simply the loss of excess water from the slab as it evaporates into the surrounding air. A slab can feel dry to the touch while still being a long way from fully cured.

The mistake many people make is assuming that once the surface looks dry, the job is done. In reality, concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks, and the early days are the most critical.

Why the First Week Matters Most

Concrete reaches roughly 70 per cent of its final strength within the first seven days, provided it stays adequately moist. If the slab dries out too quickly, particularly in Australia’s harsher climates, hydration stops prematurely and you’re left with weaker, more brittle concrete that’s prone to surface cracking and dusting.

Our climate makes this a genuine challenge. A Queensland summer afternoon, a dry westerly wind in Perth, or the baking heat of inland New South Wales can all pull moisture out of a fresh slab alarmingly fast. Wind is often the biggest culprit, even more so than heat, because it accelerates surface evaporation.

Keeping Your Slab Moist

The goal during curing is to slow down moisture loss and keep the surface damp for at least seven days. There are several proven methods:

Water curing involves keeping the surface continuously wet, either by lightly spraying it several times a day or by covering it with wet hessian or geotextile fabric and keeping that fabric saturated. This is one of the most effective approaches in hot weather.

Covering with plastic sheeting traps moisture against the slab. It’s cheap and easy, though it can leave patchy discolouration on decorative finishes.

Curing compounds are sprayed-on membranes that seal the surface and lock moisture in. These are popular with professionals because they’re low-maintenance, but they’re not always ideal if you plan to apply a coating or sealer later.

Whichever method you choose, the principle is the same: don’t let it dry out too soon.

How Long Until You Can Use It?

A common question is when the slab is ready for everyday use. As a rough guide, you can usually walk on it after 24 to 48 hours, drive a car onto a residential driveway after about seven days, and place heavy vehicles or substantial loads on it only after 28 days, which is the standard benchmark for concrete reaching its full design strength.

Patience here pays off. Rushing the process is one of the most common reasons home concreting projects fail prematurely.

Sealing, Cleaning and Long-Term Care

Once your slab has fully cured, usually after 28 days, you can think about sealing it to protect against stains, moisture ingress and wear. Sealing is particularly worthwhile for driveways and outdoor entertaining areas exposed to the elements.

Before applying any sealer, the surface needs to be clean. This is where concrete washing comes in. A thorough pressure clean removes dirt, efflorescence, mould and surface grime, giving the sealer a clean base to bond to. If you’re cleaning a relatively new slab, it’s probably best to choose a soft washing method. Ongoing care is straightforward. An occasional pressure clean and re-sealing every few years will keep your concrete looking sharp and performing well for decades.
